Why Recycle Food Waste?

That is a great question, let me answer with a question too.  Why go to all the bother of learning something about the ecosystem and adapting simple behavioral changes just to cut carbon emissions and increase soil health?  Because it is what good stewards do!

Through the process of recycling organic waste, the carbon and methane emissions that would normally occur from landfill dumping are eliminated.
The fermentation  process is only made possible by microbial life forms like bacteria and fungi.   It helps to preserve nutrients in food waste and when it is reintroduced back into the soil the cycle is completed.

But you probably already know these microbials already by another name, Probiotics. That’s right , it's some of the same type of bacteria used to make everything from wine, cheese, kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, yogurt and sourdough bread. This is yet another reason why we recycle food waste.

Farmers ferment organic material all the time, from grasses to corn.    If you have ever seen a silo on a farm, what you were seeing was a huge container of shredded corn cobs, leaves, and stalks that were fermented to preserve the nutrients and help feed cattle during the winter months.  Bacteria preserve all the nutritional value of the corn plant and provide a healthy diet for dairy cows until Spring.

Recycled food and other organic waste contains many times the nutrient value as compost.
Did you catch that?
Composting releases most of it's original content into the atmosphere in the form of gases.   This is why you start with a big pile of compost in the Spring and by the time Fall rolls around it is looking much smaller that what you started with.

Recycled food waste is  loaded with probiotics that help the soil and promote disease resistance in plants. We believe that recycling food and other organic waste items provides a viable alternative to environmental damage from landfilling. Food Waste recycling in conjunction with sustainable farming, reduces the use of petrol-chemical fertilizers that are toxic to humans, wildlife and the environment.

Food waste recycling is not the "be all and end all"   of environmental conservation or regenerative farming, it is only one component of a highly complex process that we call Nature. It is time to start being a part of the Cycle.  It's time for AgraCycle.org.
